Three Levels

of Creative Enterprise

Business and industry are at the core of how human civilization operates. Because of their utility and ability to amass wealth, they have great power in our societies. But with great power comes great responsibility. Generally the goal from the start was to turn a problem into a project and improve the quality of life for a great many of a certain set of people. Often these businesses become a slave to their utility, maximizing productivity or profits. In these efforts they often include the customer and laborer as factors of their pragmatism. If only these businesses could deliver greater messages to the eyes that are locked on them or conditions to their employees.

Sadly, the trade value is so high that these things are seldom considered and such a business thrives until they either burn themselves out through unsustainability or society becomes so appalled at the results of the customer harm or worker exploitation that the business has to run underground. Endeavors like these might always exist in our world, however. Not because human beings are corrupt, but for a much less dark reason. They are easy to begin and inexpensive to run once started. What would have throughout history made these businesses so much nicer would have been if they acted in such a way as to legitimately provide upward mobility for their workers and customers, rather than disregard, physical harm, and social stigma.

Level 1


The first level works on creations of perceived value but without an intrinsic benefit to society and they may even be harmful. Pornography made from exploited people, poisonous drugs, mass produced un-nutritious food. These things play most immediately to the appetite, and in almost every case prioritize the sale or trade to the longterm good. These are generally consumed in large number because the pleasure is so short term, meaning that the demand increases and so do exploitation and harm. Commercial ventures like these could be made better if the same amount of concern was put into caring for the manufacturing source, or the worker, or the well being of the buyer, and maybe even be called virtuous by the greater part of the population.

Level 2


The second may not directly harm the world but that which is produced mostly provides convenience or pleasure. This may include cinema, cruises, fashion, etc. There is a legitimate place in the world for these things. Humans beings need relief, joy, and catharsis regardless of their quality of life, so there is no sin in this business, but it falls short in only one subtle way. It falls short of doing as much as it can do. Often, those that can build such a business or create such a product have the means to do great work on huge scales. This is because they have managed to obtain two things. Prestige and attention. People look at these creative ventures repectfully, and why shouldn't they. They make people happy, often cause little or sustainable harm to the world, and are often favorites of celebrities and the idle rich.

Level 3


Finally, the third provides a direct enhancement or benefit to the world beyond simply being convenient. These also provide the greatest return on impact. Such a business has high value, but by nature of it own propriety, generally sees the least financial game. These businesses might never see their IPO, but most often they should at least have the opportunity. If they could seems as sexy as they seem hard, or as fun as they seem impossible they'd have many more founders, much more support, and all of the investors. The creator or worker has no priority on production or profit, but rather on doing the most good for the greatest many. It is in this realm one can find the most effective and worthy results.
